As the fourth model in the series, the Audi activesphere concept marks the culmination of sphere concept vehicles brought forth by the brand with the four rings. Following on from the Audi skysphere roadster in 2021, and both the Audi grandsphere sedan, and the Audi urbansphere space concept in April 2022, a four-door crossover coupé with an astonishingly versatile body design is now making its debut. Standing 4.98 meters long, the highly elegant car is more than a mere luxury-class sports car, with impressive ground clearance, and large 22-inch wheels announcing its off-road talent. The Sportback rear of the activesphere can turn into an open cargo bed (“active back”) at the touch of a button – perfect for carrying recreational equipment such as e-bikes or water and winter sports gear.

By combining opposites in perfect synthesis, the Audi activesphere proves to be a versatile crosser of boundaries, with a drive system and suspension which make it equally adept on both on and off the road. The steering wheel and pedals allow the driver to actively control the car, while also offering autonomous driving for a more relaxed time on the road. As a coupé that is as elegant as it is dynamic, it features classic proportions and lines, but in just a few seconds, the car transforms into a pickup for transporting top-class sports gear – there is even enough space for two e-bikes in the cargo bed.

The concept car was conceived and designed at the Audi Design Studio in Malibu, just a stone’s throw away from the Pacific Coast Highway, the legendary coastal road. Studio manager Gael Buzyn and his team are the creative minds behind the project. He describes the idea behind the project: “The activesphere is unique. It is a new type of crossover that cleverly combines the elegance of an Audi Sportback, the practicality of a SUV and true offroad capabilities.”

With an electric drive and quick-charging technology from Audi’s PPE modular system, the Audi activesphere joins the sphere family of concept vehicles. With no local emissions, a range of over 600 km, and extremely fast charging times thanks to 800-volt technology, it combines the sustainability, dynamics and long-distance capability of state-of-the-art electric vehicles.

The autonomous chauffeuring capability on suitable terrain gives drivers and passengers a new level of freedom, which, thanks to the new display and operating technology, can be used in the activesphere in a variety of ways. The innovative operating concept, Audi dimensions, combines the physical and virtual worlds (i.e., mixed reality) by displaying digital content in the occupants’ fields of vision in real time.

High-tech headsets provide a view of the real environment and the route, while simultaneously displaying 3D content and interactive elements– individually configurable for drivers and passengers.

This means all driver-relevant information, such as driving status and navigation, can be displayed. And in the interior, headset users can see control panels and other virtual displays in a tidy, minimalist design that remains hidden to the unaided eye. Mixed reality optics gives users the ability to interact precisely with these real, yet invisible, touch-sensitive zones, as the headsets display and carry out functions by reacting in real time when users touch them.

As a perfect all-rounder, the Audi activesphere concept is ideally suited for the high demands of a future-oriented generation of Audi customers – people for whom individual mobility and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. Also, owners who expect their vehicle to deliver the brand’s typical aesthetics and dynamism in the highest degree, combined with future-oriented technology. Audi Tradition is starting a new season marked by numerous anniversaries, first and foremost the 150th anniversary of the traditional NSU brand. For this special occasion, Audi Tradition is bringing classic NSU models from its historic vehicle collection for trips and events. An overview of the most important anniversaries of the year is provided in the booklet "Anniversary Dates 2023", which is now available for download from the Audi MediaCenter.

Two anniversaries are highlighted in Audi Tradition's annual schedule: "150 years of NSU" and "25 years of the Audi TT". Since its premiere in 1998, the sports car has been delighting fans worldwide with its driving pleasure and purist design. A quarter of a century of Audi TT and the anniversary of the style icon is closely linked to the history of Audi Hungaria. The AUDI AG subsidiary based in Győr, Hungary, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023. Originally founded in February 1993 as an engine-only plant, Audi Hungaria took over the assembly of the Audi TT in 1998 in a production network with the Ingolstadt plant. A "TT" also played a role in NSU's 150-year history. What began with ten workers and waterwheel-powered knitting machines in 1873 evolved at the Neckarsulm site into an impressive story of transformation with many technical innovations. As is the heritage of NSU, these are still embedded in the genes of AUDI AG today. So it is no coincidence that Neckarsulm is now the headquarters of Audi Sport GmbH, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2023 and has its origins in quattro GmbH, which was founded in 1983.The path taken by the traditional NSU brand also reflects the development of transport in Germany, as it progresses from bicycles to motorcycles and finally to automobiles. The NSU brand's innovative spirit and multifaceted nature are also apparent in the fact that quite a few models will be celebrating anniversaries in 2023: for example the NSU Wankel Spider (60th anniversary), the NSU Quickly (launched 70 years ago) and the two pre-war automobiles NSU 6/30 and NSU 7/34 (95th anniversary).

Audi Tradition is taking part in more than a dozen events in Germany and abroad this year. Classics on the event calendar include the Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 13-16), the Classic Days in Düsseldorf (August 4-6), the Donau Classic (June 22-24) and the Heidelberg Historic (July 13-15) as the two classic car rallies at the company's home bases in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm.

The Audi museum mobile will participate in International Museum Day (May 21) and the Night of Museums (September 9). In 2022, Audi was once again able to significantly increase deliveries of all-electric cars: with an increase of around 44 percent, the brand systematically continued its electrification strategy, thereby maintaining its course in a year characterized by global crises. In total, Audi sold over 1.61 million vehicles last year, which was close to the previous year’s level despite prolonged supply bottlenecks and major challenges in the logistics chain. Audi beat 2021’s results in Europe, Germany, and more core markets.

“The strong numbers for the all-electric models show us that our clear focus on electric mobility is the right path,” says Hildegard Wortmann, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. Overall, Audi delivered 118,196 electric models to customers last year, which is 44.3 percent more than in 2021.

The high demand for the all-electric models Audi Q4 e-tron, Audi e-tron GT quattro, and Audi e-tron affirms the company’s clear decision in favor of an all-electric future and will increase Audi’s momentum on its path toward becoming a sustainable premium mobility supplier. A new model is already waiting in the wings: the new Audi Q8 e-tron is continuing the Audi e-tron’s success story as an electric pioneer. The model has already received many preorders ahead of its market launch in the spring of 2023. Starting in 2026, Audi will only introduce all-electric cars to the global market.

“In a challenging and dynamic environment, our global team once again proved its resilience in 2022,” says Hildegard Wortmann. “Thanks to extraordinary team spirit, operational excellence and effective sales control, we were able to close out the business year successfully.”

Alongside the all-electric models, the Audi A3 (+12.1 percent), Audi A4 (+8.0 percent), and Audi Q5 (+2.7 percent) saw particularly large increases within the overall portfolio. Audi Sport also had a special year in 2022: deliveries of 45,515 high performance cars mean a new record and an increase of 15.6% year-over-year.

With 624,498 cars delivered in Europe, Audi was able to increase sales by 1.2 percent over 2021. All-electric models saw increased demand here as well, particularly the Audi Q4 e-tron (+99.4 percent), Audi e-tron GT (+29.2 percent), and the Audi e-tron (+8.5 percent). Audi Sport contributed to the strong result with a record of 29.417 vehicles delivered in Europe (+30.8 percent). In total, sales were higher 29 European markets year-over-year.

Sales in Germany were a particularly strong contributor to the positive trends in Europe (214,678 vehicles, +18.7 percent). A significant increase in fully electric model deliveries (+87.8 percent) made up a large portion of those. The company increased its market share here considerably, also due to a strong increase in deliveries of all-electric models (+87.8 percent). Audi Sport also set a new record in the company’s home market with 12,993 models sold for an increase of 43 percent.

Demand for all-electric Audi models was as high as ever in the US in 2022. That is evident from the record 16,177 vehicle sales – an increase of 47.3 percent over 2021. There were 10,397 Audi e-tron sales alone, marking an increase of 7.2 percent. Since the launch of the Audi Q4 e-tron and Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, Audi has the largest portfolio of electric cars in the market. Due to logistics and supply bottlenecks, the total number of vehicles delivered in the US was 186,875, slightly below the previous year at -4.7 percent. However, customer demand continues to be high.

The company delivered a total of 642,548 cars in China, which is 8.4 percent fewer than the previous year. The decline was due to the ongoing supply bottlenecks, particularly in semiconductors, as well as production limitations due to COVID-19. At the dealerships, constraints caused by the Covid pandemic also made themselves felt in temporary showroom closings. The number of fully electric models that were delivered increased by 9,8 percent. In 2022, the company successfully grew its electric portfolio in China with the new Audi Q5 e-tron Roadjet, the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Audi RS e-tron GT. Further increases were achieved by the Audi A3 (+ 10.0 percent), Audi A4 (+14.9 percent), and Audi Q5 (+4.5 percent).

Demand for fully electric models in further markets around the world increased by 90.2 percent. In total, Audi delivered a total of 160,310 cars (-3.5 percent) in these markets, that, in addition to challenges in the supply chain and ongoing logistics bottlenecks, were also impacted by geopolitical crises. The company achieved significant growth, especially in the Middle East (+47.9 percent), India (+27.1 percent), and Taiwan (+22.2 percent).

“Even though we’re still facing global economic challenges, we’re looking toward the future with confidence,” says Hildegard Wortmann. “That’s because we’re going into 2023, during which we will accelerate the transformation together, with an attractive portfolio, a large number of orders and a highly motivated team.”

Regarding production volumes, 2022 was a successful year for Audi Hungaria despite global challenges and uncertainties. In vehicle manufacturing, 171,134 cars, the highest number ever, rolled off the production lines (including cars for the Brazilian SKD production) (171,015 in 2021). The brand with the four rings manufactured a total of 1,677,545 powertrains during the year (1,620,767 in 2021). Of these powertrains, 108,097 were electric powertrains (96,976 in 2021). Audi Hungaria remains one of the largest employers in the country, with 11,957 employees at the end of 2022. In 2023, the company, celebrating its 30th anniversary, aims to reach new milestones.

“Just as we have done in the last three decades of our company’s existence, we successfully closed the year 2022. External factors, such as the aftermath of the pandemic or the energy and raw material supply problems, have presented our company with unprecedented challenges. However, our high production volumes clearly demonstrate that we are able to perform well even under difficult circumstances, thanks to the flexibility, expertise and many years of experience of our colleagues. We continue to deliver on our Next Level strategy. In 2023, we will reach new milestones in digitalization, electromobility and sustainability, and continue to develop our business model, especially in the Shared Competence Center (SCC). In 2023, we will show again what great things the team of Audi Hungaria is capable of,” said Alfons Dintner, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria Zrt.

In 2022, a total of 171,134 Audi models (including cars for the Brazilian SKD production) rolled off the production lines at the brand with the four rings, a record performance for Audi Hungaria. Audi Q3 models were produced in the highest number, with 98,665 units. In addition, 64,343 Q3 Sportback, 6,291 TT Coupé and 1,835 TT Roadster models were also produced in Győr. Of the Q3 and Q3 Sportback models with electric powertrains, 21,466 plug-in hybrid and 25,181 mild hybrid models were produced in 2022.

As the world’s largest powertrain manufacturer, Audi Hungaria manufactured a total of 1,677,545 powertrains last year, including 108,097 electric powertrains. The company also produced 221,141 three-cylinder, 684,018 four-cylinder petrol and 293,667 diesel engines. During the previous year, of five‑cylinder Otto engines, a total of 21,745, while of six-cylinder engines, 265,857 petrol and 77,931 diesel engines were produced. In addition, Audi Hungaria also manufactured 5,089 ten-cylinder engines.

Audi Hungaria had 11,957 employees as at December 31, 2022.

For Team Audi Sport, the first half of the 2023 Dakar Rally was an emotionally intense mix: Two stage victories and the Audi RS Q e-tron’s first three days in the lead at the world’s toughest rally were offset by setbacks for all three driver teams. Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist were leading in Saudi Arabia after the prologue, Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz on the two following days. However, different damage on the hard stages threw them far back. Stéphane Peterhansel/Edouard Boulanger were in second place after the fourth special stage but dropped out two days later due to an accident.

The 2023 Dakar Rally surprised the participants with great hardship and caused a lot of turbulence in the classification. Stony tracks after the prologue led to 14 punctures on four consecutive legs starting on New Year’s Day in Team Audi Sport, spread across all three Audi RS Q e-tron cars. Sections with camel grass imposed heavy compressions and thus high loads on the rally cars and their crews on the fifth stage. And finally, rain not only caused unexpectedly hard sand but forced a route change. Due to a flooded bivouac site, the organizers inserted a half-marathon stage with a modified route and limited service before the rest day on January 9.

At this point, start number 204 was already no longer in the race. Dakar record winner Stéphane Peterhansel crashed on a dune on the sixth stage, where he landed extremely hard after a jump. His co-driver Edouard Boulanger subsequently complained of back pain. A helicopter took him to a hospital where doctors diagnosed a vertebral injury. Audi later had him flown out to specialists in Germany. “In this way, we are enabling Edouard to receive optimal care. Fortunately, no permanent damage is expected,” said Rolf Michl, Head of Motorsport at Audi. “The entire Team Audi Sport wishes him a speedy recovery.” Stéphane Peterhansel: “I have no more memories of the accident, so hard was the landing. I’m glad that Edouard doesn’t have any more serious injuries.”

Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz tore off their left front wheel on landing at the same spot. The repair plus 18 hours of penalty time dropped the three-time Dakar winners far behind. The following day, Sainz stopped and lost further hours to help teammate Ekström with suspension damage. Before the rest day, the two Spaniards are 116th overall. “We were lucky that nothing worse happened to us in the accident at that treacherous spot,” Sainz said. “It was natural that in our position we helped Mattias with the repairs the day after.” Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist lost 15 minutes due to a missed waypoint at the start. A stone that could not be spotted in a fast passage caused a broken rear left suspension on the seventh stage, followed the next day by damage to the cooling system. As a result, the two Scandinavians are currently the best-placed Audi team in position 39. “When we didn’t always trust the information in the roadbook, like on the sixth stage, we adjusted our pace,” Mattias Ekström looks back. “After seven days of rallying, we were in fifth place but the invisible stone and the broken suspension set us back significantly.”

“This is obviously not the race we had hoped for,” says Rolf Michl. “However, with nine top-3 stage results over more than 3,000 stage kilometers, we showed that the Audi RS Q e-tron with its low-emission powertrain is absolutely competitive. Our goal therefore continues to be first-class stage results.” Uwe Breuling, Head of Vehicle Operations, refers to the united team performance: “Even though the setbacks dampened the mood, nobody got discouraged. Team Audi Sport continues to work with Q Motorsport in a concentrated manner to optimally prepare our two cars every day, to utilize all learning effects and to finish the rally.” Sven Quandt, Team Director of Q Motorsport, looks back on a particularly tough edition of the rally in his interim assessment: “When teams as experienced as Stéphane Peterhansel/Edouard Boulanger and Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz experience such setbacks, this says a lot about the level of difficulty. Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist also had to put up with a lot. But we weren’t the only ones to suffer disappointments. Day by day, many positions in the top field shifted, which shows how tough this edition is. Now we have to stay focused because we still have several tough desert stages in the Empty Quarter and a total of another 1,300 stage kilometers ahead of us.”
